SUMMARY:Private investors are ready to invest in community housing. Are you ready?
DESCRIPTION:As community housing organizations take on ambitious development\, acquisition\, and retrofit projects\, many are being asked to navigate a more complex financing landscape. While public investment remains essential to achieving deep affordability\, today’s projects often require multiple funding sources\, including mission-aligned private investment capital. \nSo how can nonprofit and co-operative housing providers prepare for these conversations? What does it mean to be investment-ready? And what do investors look for before committing capital to a project? \n⇒ Register here \nJoin us for a practical discussion with Lena Courcol\, Director of acquisitions\, and Garth Davis\, Managing partner at New Market Funds\, one of Canada’s leading impact investment organizations. We will explore what community housing providers can do to prepare for new opportunities. Participants will gain a better understanding of how to talk with private lenders\, what makes a project attractive to investors\, how mission-aligned lenders assess risk\, impact\, governance\, and financial sustainability\, and why promising projects sometimes struggle to secure financing. The discussion will also explore the organizational foundations that support successful capital conversations\, from board alignment and financial literacy to long-term planning. \nModerated by Stephan Richard\, community housing sector expert\, this session will explore key questions: \n\nWhat investment-readiness means and why it matters for community housing organizations.\nHow mission-aligned investors evaluate projects\, balancing financial sustainability with social impact.\nPractical steps organizations\, boards\, and leadership teams can take to prepare before approaching investors.\nHow to build the knowledge\, confidence\, and credibility needed to engage effectively with investment partners.\n\nWhether your organization is considering its first major development\, acquisitions\, expanding its portfolio\, or planning future growth\, this webinar will provide practical insights to help you better understand today’s financing environment and assess your organization’s readiness for serious capital conversations. \nNote: This webinar will be offered in both English and French through simultaneous interpretation.

SUMMARY:Buying what others can’t see: Student Housing NS’ acquisition strategy

In a market where the best deals are not always publicly advertised\, Student Housing Nova Socia has developed practical methods to identify opportunities\, negotiate effectively\, compete for properties\, and hold its own in a market dominated by private developers. \nModerated by Amanda R. Knight\, Program manager at the Centre\, this session explores key questions facing many community housing organizations today: How to identify the right acquisition opportunities? What should they look for during due diligence? And what conditions should never be waived too early in a purchase agreement? \nWatch the webinar: \n \n  \n“Another shift\, I think\, is understanding what the development community is doing\, as I started realizing that everything was happening quite fast for some property transactions.” \nMitchell Archibald\, Executive Director of Student Housing Nova Scotia \nTopics of the discussion include: \n\nAdopting a strategic acquisition mindset.\nBuilding an effective acquisition team.\nChoosing the right real estate agent.\nIdentifying acquisition opportunities that are not publicly listed.\n\nThis webinar is designed for executive directors\, development managers\, asset managers\, board members\, and community housing leaders seeking practical strategies to grow their portfolios and increase their long-term impact. \nWant to learn more? SUMMARY:From vision to action: The strategic journey of Entre Nous Femmes Housing Society
DESCRIPTION:Watch this session with Lilian Chau\, CEO of Entre Nous Femmes Housing Society (ENFHS)\, sharing how and why this housing provider needed to evolve into a growth-oriented organization with strong development\, financing\, leadership\, and partnerships. The webinar was moderated by Severn Nelson\, Program Manager for British Columbia. \nAs a part of the Centre knowledge sharing series\, this webinar explores how ENFHS has undertaken a major strategic shift by adopting an approach focused on partnership capacity and business mindset in service of a charitable purpose. It also highlights the critical role of resolute strategic thinking\, organizational self-exploration grounded in theory of change\, and internal capacities (including governance\, financial expertise\, and leadership) as essential foundations for organizational growth. \nThe complexity of the housing crisis\, rising costs\, and growing demand\, combined with expiring operating agreements\, made it clear that a purely operational focus would not be enough to meet community needs or ensure organizational sustainability. \nIn this recording\, you’ll find practical guidance on how to: \n\nShift from an operational focus to a mission-led entrepreneurial focus that can sustain itself and grow despite funding environment shifts;\nBecome a housing provider capable of delivering large-scale\, mixed-income communities while maintaining deep affordability and equity\n\n  \n“A lot of organizations already do strategic planning\, but I would say that we really need to look at the future\, and assess the health of the organization\, as well as scanning the landscape. I guess another thing I would say is\, don’t start with a project. You really do need to start with understanding your organization. \nMore than ever\, strategic planning is really critical to understanding where your organization is at right now\, and where you want to go in the future.” \nLilian Chau\, CEO of Entre Nous Femmes Housing Society \n  \nWatch the webinar replay: \n \n  \nWant to learn more? SUMMARY:Consolidating to secure the future of organizations and the housing stock: Strategies from Eastern Quebec
DESCRIPTION:In a context of limited financial resources\, a need to preserve the housing stock\, and a lack of leadership succession in rural areas\, consolidation is becoming a key strategy for protecting and developing community housing. \nWatch this session featuring David Barbaza\, Executive Director of Fédération des OSBL d’habitation du Bas-Saint-Laurent\, de la Gaspésie et des Îles-de-la-Madeleine (FOHBGI) and President and Co-founder of Logéco\, who shared practical insights from a community housing organization consolidation initiative in Eastern Quebec. The session was moderated by Jonathan Fleury\, Program manager Québec. \nIn Eastern Quebec\, several small non-profit housing organizations manage a sometimes-aging housing stock with limited resources\, making it increasingly difficult to maintain services and keep buildings in good condition. It is in this context that a structural transformation has been implemented\, led by the FOHBGI. This initiative resulted in the creation of Logéco as a central mechanism and regional safety net to pool property management\, standardize practices\, and strengthen professional support to members. It has also fostered a new culture of collaboration and solidarity across the region. \nAs a part of the Centre knowledge sharing series\, this recording explores what made consolidation both relevant and feasible\, how it was implemented\, conditions of success\, and what concrete changes it brings to the stability and growth of the regional community housing stock. \nWhether you are a leader\, board member\, or manager of a community housing organization\, this recording is designed to provide insights and offer guidance on assessing the potential for consolidation to join forces in a strategy for resilience and growth. \n  \n“Communication is 75% of the work when it comes to consolidation. You really have to listen and be supportive. We’re here to offer organizations a framework and a future for their buildings. It’s a collaborative approach\, and the solutions are tailored to each organization. Decisions are made together. I like to go back to the etymology of words: “consolidate” comes from “con” and “solidare”\, which means we’re building something solid together.”\nDavid Barbaza\, Logéco \n  \nWatch the webinar replay (audio interpretation in English) : \n \n  \nWant to learn more?
