The Community Housing Growth Fund (CHGF) offers new financial resources to support Nova-Scotia’s non-profit and cooperative housing. It’s an acknowledgement of the vital role they play in creating healthy, vibrant and affordable communities.
The fund provides money, new tools and expertise, empowering community housing providers to increase the supply of affordable housing options. The Nova Scotia government’s setting up and financing of the Community Housing Growth Fund are inspired by the Nova Scotia Affordable Housing Commission’s recommendation tabled in 2021.

ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is the Community Housing Transformation Centre administering the program?
Not to mention, the Centre has a solid and constructive relationship with the Nova Scotia housing sector. Over the last three years, the Centre engaged in dialogue and funding activity with the Nova Scotia Government and community housing organizations from every region in the province. This record includes allocating $803,840 to community housing groups and contributing to the recent Nova Scotia Affordable Housing Commission.
Also, the Centre will contribute another $550,000 to support capacity building in the sector and the operational needs of the non-profit housing association once it is formed.
How much funding is available?
There is a total of $2.5 million available through the Community Housing Growth Fund over a two-year period.
What type of projects are eligible?
The Community Housing Growth Fund has four program streams:
- Capacity Building: projects that strengthen the skills and competencies needed to undertake activities that lead to organizational growth
- Planning and Pre-Development: funding to cover costs of pre-development activities related to the construction of new affordable housing (e.g., business plans, preliminary designs, development permits, etc.).
- Research and Innovation: support for activities that will promote innovation, education and knowledge transfer in the community housing sector.
- Provincial Non-Profit Housing Association: funding to help establish a new non-profit housing association with a mandate to stabilize, transform and grow the sector, and support the Association operations and program delivery for at least two years.
When will the funding be available?
The Centre is working with Municipal Affairs and Housing to design program criteria, eligibility, process, and reporting requirements over the next few months. Once complete, we will announce program launch and application deadlines. A dedicated Nova Scotia-based Centre employee will be available to answer questions and support applicants through the application process.
