The Learning Systems Assistant is a Canada Summer Jobs student role supporting the migration organization of RentSmart’s educational content into a new Learning Management System (LMS). Reporting to the Manager of RentSmart, the student will contribute to building a clear, accessible, and well-structured digital learning environment for Community Educators and program partners. The role is administrative and technical in nature, focused on content transfer, quality checks, and learning-platform organization.

This position offers hands-on experience in learning technologies, LMS administration, and instructional design structure within a national nonprofit context.

Organization: Community Housing Transformation Centre

Location: Remote work within Vancouver, British Columbia to facilitate the possibility of in person meetings with the project team.

Position Type: Full-Time (approximately 35 hours/week), temporary, with possible travel

Salary Range: $27.80 per hour

Duration: Up to 8 weeks, depending on candidate availability and project needs.

RentSmart is a recognized tenancy education program designed to build life skills, knowledge, and confidence in tenants and landlords through certified Community Educators. The program’s cornerstone is a Train-The-Trainer course that equips educators to offer the RentSmart Certificate and supplementary courses in their communities.

Key responsibilities:

  • Transfer and migrate data and learning content from RentSmart’s current platform into the new LMS.
  • Assist in preparing LMS training content by formatting, uploading, and organizing modules and learning pathways.
  • Provide administrative support to the migration process, including data entry, error checking, version control, and documenting progress.
  • Update and maintain project contacts by verifying information, updating details, and organizing contact lists.
  • Follow RentSmart data-security and confidentiality protocols when handling learner and partner information.
  • Apply basic instructional design principles while organizing materials to support clarity, accessibility, and learner experience
  • Use online project tools to manage tasks and submit routine updates to the team.
  • Participate in learning opportunities, including observing workshops and divisional meetings to understand program delivery and operations of the Community Housing Transformation Centre.

Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in educational technology, instructional design, learning sciences, information management, user experience design or a related field.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) preferred (e.g., Open EdX, Moodle, Canvas, etc.).
  • Familiarity with creative instructional design approaches (e.g., organizing learning pathways, applying basic UX or learner-centered design principles) is an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail and comfort working with digital tools, structured documents, and data.
  • Be able to work autonomously in a remote environment, adhering to project deliverables within a set timeline.

  • French language skills are an asset.

Supervision Plan:

  • Routine check-ins with the RentSmart team to review tasks and priorities.
  • Weekly one-on-one meetings for guidance, training, and feedback.
  • Participation in weekly RentSmart project and Community Housing Academy meetings, and bi-weekly Development Team meetings.
  • Use of online tools to access tasks and submit progress updates and ensure adherence to project deliverables.
  • In addition to it being a remote position, the student will have access to key team members in person.

Mentorship Plan:

  • Mentorship from the Education Specialist, Manager, RentSmart and Manager, Community Housing Academy to support learning and portfolio development.
  • Opportunities to observe RentSmart workshops and participate in team meetings to see program delivery and operations.
  • A structured onboarding plan introducing key staff, tools, and workflows.
  • Exposure to real-world instructional design practice, including how learning materials are structured, adapted, and improved in a digital platform.
  • Fundamentals of project management, including task prioritization, use of digital project management tools, effective communications and professional reporting practices.
  • Develop an understanding of a professional work environment through exposure to multiple business units and organizations.
  • Opportunities for professional development within the non-market housing sector through Centre wide team meetings, webinars, and participation in cross departmental collaborations.

To be eligible for this Canada Summer Jobs position, applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment, have a valid Social Insurance Number, and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
