Policy brief: Preserving affordable homes in the private rental market

This report by the Canadian Centre for Housing Rights is part of their Housing Policy Tools Series. It reviews policy tools in Canada available at the municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal levels. The goal is to highlight the opportunities to preserve and increase the supply of the affordable housing market.

The report outlines several policy tools to: 1) maintain affordable rent (through regulation, vacancy control, rental registries, acquisition programs), 2) maintain homes and prevent neglect (through maintenance standards, rental licensing), 3) preserve affordability in redevelopments (through demolition control and rental replacement, and renter assistance), 4) protect rental housing conversions (through condo conversion policies, and short-term regulations).
The importance of inter-governmental cooperation and coordination is also emphasized.

Topics include: policy tools for affordability preservation in the private rental market, governmental cooperation
