Shut out – discrimination in the rental housing market: Barriers to tenancy access and maintenance, its impacts, and possible interventions

This study explores the experiences of tenants who have faced discrimination in their search for rental housing, during their tenancy, and after occupying a rental unit. The research aims to gain insights into the lived experiences of rental discrimination, focusing on examining the gendered aspects of these experiences. The findings from this research aim to foster dialogue on discrimination, generate actionable recommendations to address discrimination and promote more inclusive practices in the rental housing sector. Notably, it revealed that discrimination in rental housing can occur at every stage of tenancy, influences the search for future housing options, and varies across different population groups.
