The Centre recently hosted the webinar Preserving and Strengthening Communities: The Experience of New Roots in Halifax, with New Roots CLT and their partner Happy Cities, as part of the launch of the Resource Inventory webinar series. The webinar addressed various strategies adopted by New Roots CLT to preserve the cultural identity of neighbourhoods while promoting economic and social development.
News Roots CLT is a community land trust based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, dedicated to securing permanently affordable housing and protecting historically Black communities from displacement. By acquiring and stewarding land collectively, the organization ensures that residents have long-term control over their neighborhoods, preserving cultural identity while fostering economic and social development.
Speakers discussed the housing challenges faced by Black communities, the threat of displacement, and the innovative solutions being put in place to address these issues. Through collective land ownership and community-driven planning, News Roots CLT is helping residents remain in their neighborhoods and build a more inclusive future.
For those who couldn’t attend the live session, the webinar recording is now available. We invite you to watch this insightful presentation to learn more about how News Roots CLT is working to strengthen local communities.
