Many people experience housing instability simply because they don’t know their rights, their responsibilities, or how to communicate effectively with a landlord. Frontline workers are all too familiar with this reality and do their best to address it every day.

In addition to working with limited resources, social service professionals must navigate literacy challenges, housing instability, and the systemic barriers faced by the people they support.

The RentSmart program helps organizations strengthen their capacity to respond by:

  • Providing a structured framework for tenancy education
  • Shifting from reactive intervention to preventive action
  • Promoting tenant autonomy
  • Enhancing credibility and impact through certification
  • Equipping agencies with ready-to-use resources available through an updated online dashboard
  • Building a network of peers and professional support

Community educators at the heart of housing stability

Certified community educators play a key role: they support tenants in gaining access to stable housing and maintaining it. Through the RentSmart modules, educators offer hands-on guidance to help prevent conflicts, make informed decisions, and build lasting rental relationships.

At the heart of the RentSmart program, these professionals are building a growing support network across British Columbia, Ontario, and soon, throughout the country.

Local roots, tailored solutions

RentSmart educators are often already deeply connected to their communities and become trusted points of contact.

The certification provides them with a tested curriculum and the confidence to lead workshops that go far beyond explaining security deposits and help prevent crises before they happen.

“After completing the RentSmart educator training, I felt better prepared to address tenancy issues with the people I support,” shared one participant. “It’s less intimidating to talk about these topics because I know I’m sharing accurate, engaging tools.”

A ripple effect that benefits everyone

The impact of RentSmart educators is tangible and lasting. They turn abstract tenancy laws into practical knowledge that improves tenants’ daily lives. For a young person renting for the first time, these workshops provide the missing guide to navigating housing.

As one educator noted, “The program helps young people take their first steps toward independence. They learn things they didn’t know before, and it gives them confidence.”

The true strength of this network lies in its ripple effect.

By equipping tenants with knowledge and confidence, these professionals strengthen entire households. Each workshop contributes to neighborhood stability and helps build, one conversation at a time, a community more resilient to eviction and homelessness.

The RentSmart program provides the national framework, but educators embody its local heart, adapting their approach to the unique needs of the people they serve.

The results speak clearly to the quality of their work, best captured in the words of a participant: “RentSmart helped me gain confidence in finding housing. It taught me my rights and responsibilities as a tenant — and I found a place very quickly!”
