The Social Planning Council of Kingston & District led a study to understand displacement in the community through firsthand accounts from affected tenants in the community.
The report highlights tenants’ challenges, including evictions for profit, precarious options, and a lack of alternatives to eviction. It also discusses the impact of displacement on tenants’ lives, such as difficulties finding new housing and the risk of homelessness.
The recommendations include more affordable rental unit availability, improved capacity of property owners, improved compliance with landlord responsibilities, protect disabled tenants, strengthened timely access to the Landlord-Tenant Board (LTB), legal aid, and eviction prevention workers, and better options for unhoused people in emergency shelters and encampments.
