We are pleased to announce the establishment of Nunavut’s Nunalingni Piruqpaalirut Fund (NPF), or Growth in our Land Fund. The result of collaboration between the Community Housing Transformation Centre and the Nunavut Housing Corporation, it aims to address housing priorities in Nunavut and provide financial resources to support the territory’s community housing sector.
Created as part of the Nunavut 3000 strategic plan, the NPF will help address long-term systemic challenges in Nunavut’s housing sector, such as housing shortages, limited housing choices, aging and inadequate housing stock, and high rates of overcrowding.
The fund will have three streams to address different aspects of the crisis:
Capacity building: This stream will provide grants to support projects aimed at developing community housing organizations, filling capacity gaps, and establishing a sustainable foundation for growth.
Planning and pre-development: This component will help cover the costs of pre-development activities related to the construction of new affordable housing and overcome barriers to accessing capital and federal funding.
Research and innovation: This component will support projects aimed at promoting innovation, education, and knowledge transfer in the community housing sector.
Eligible entities for the NPF include non-profit housing agencies, housing co-operatives, non-profit organizations and community/regional groups and coalitions. Academics working in partnership with non-profit organizations are also eligible to apply under the Research and Innovation stream.
We are excited about the positive impact the NPF will have on housing in Nunavut by meeting Nunavummiut’s aspirations for adequate, affordable housing. Together with the Nunavut Housing Corporation, we are committed to working to increase the stock of accessible housing, reduce the number of people experiencing homelessness and expand the housing supply in Nunavut.
